Flax seeds offer a great way to boost intake of fibre and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Our organic flax seeds have been minimally processed – they have not been ground or milled and are exactly as they are when fresh from the plant.
Renowned for its versatility, flax seed has been historically used in food, medicine, clothing, and paper. Also known as linseed, flax seed is used to make linen, a textile commonly used prior to the commercialisation of cotton. Flax seeds were prized by the Ancient Egyptians, used to make linen for only the most superior priests due to being symbolic of purity. Early consumption of flax seed was popularised by Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates as he prescribed the seed for abdominal pain relief. The Emperor Charlemagne was even known to enforce the consumption of flax seed by law during the 8th century due to his strong belief in its health benefits.
Flax seeds grow within round brown pods upon the blue flowering Linum Usitatissimum plant. This plant is suited to the colder regions of the world such as Canada, Russia, and Ukraine as well as in Europe. Cultivation of flax for food consumption has largely been driven by the bioactive compounds present in the seed; omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), lignans and fibre. These bioactive compounds are each associated with various health benefits such as cardio-vascular health and anti-cancer properties.
Offering a mild nutty flavour and oily texture, flaxseeds are a great addition to porridge, yoghurts and salads. Use them for baking biscuits, flapjacks and breads or blend into a superfood smoothie for an omega-3 boost.
